THE DUMP

“Last week we had two casualties here. First there was a boy about 10 years old who was killed when a large bin fell on his head. Two days later, a 16-year old girl was run over by a truck. We tried our best but we couldn′t save her.”
The words come from a 42-year old man, a father of six. There have been numerous victims like these two since the Stung Meanchey garbage dump opened more than 45 years ago. Most likely more will follow. Today more than 2,000 people work at the site and almost half of these are children under the age of twelve. Each day 900 tons of waste arrives at the site and each day children and adults, looking for things to sell, have to walk side-by-side through mountains of rotting food, scrap metal, plastic bins, hypodermic needles and broken glass.
The Dump with its strong pictures and straightforward text is not only a story about some of the most unfortunate people on earth, it is also a tribute to the most persistent people ever seen travelling along an endless road of poverty, humiliation and oceans of tears.
The Dump is written and photographed by Peppe Arninge, a journalist who has lived and worked in Cambodia for many years.
